Social Smokers

A lot of people say, “I only smoke on the weekends.”

Even if they are telling the truth, which may or not be the case, how can they handle only doing it on certain days of the week?

“Let’s get one thing straight, nicotine isn’t selective about who gets addicted and who does not.”

It’s one of the most harmful substances in the world, so it’s never a point of saying, “Well, I can have a few and not be addicted. It doesn’t bother me.”

Quite simply, they are newbies. It’s only going to get worse.

Not everyone starts out smoking a pack a day.

They usually start out only having them at parties on the weekends, and then from there it worsens.

I certainly didn’t start out smoking a pack a day. It was only on the weekends with friends.

As the days progressed, those “events” with friends began happening during the week, so I smoked more.

Are social smokers addicted?

Yes, they are. If they weren’t addicted, they’d be OK with not smoking on the weekends, but they do.

Once they’ve established to themselves and to the world that they only light up when they drink, it’s all downhill from there.

“Alcohol can trap you into thinking that it’s impossible to drink and not have a cigarette at the same time.”

Once a pattern repeats itself, you’re pretty much tagged a regular smoker, regardless of what day it is.

Sure, young people only drink on the weekends.

Why?

They aren’t old enough to buy alcohol for themselves during the week. Plus, they live with their parents.

I’m sure there are no field parties going on during the week during high school.

Eventually everyone starts smoking more and more. They start smoking each and every day.

They make excuses like, “Oh, I’ll just have this one, and I won’t have another until the weekend. It’s no big deal because I only smoke when I drink.”

See the pattern forming?

Eventually it gets you. No one is immune to addiction. Nicotine isn’t picky about who becomes addicted.

It doesn’t care if you’re rich or poor, or where you live. Anyone is fair game.

I also think some social smokers are liars. They may say, “I only smoke on the weekends,” but is that the truth?

How do you know they’re telling the truth? Are they your roommate? Probably not.

Have you ever caught a glimpse of a cigarette pack in their purse or pocket? I bet you have.

I’ve caught plenty of people lying about their smoking habits. When girls are opening up their purses, I always see pack of cigarettes.

For guys, I can see the outline of the pack in the pocket of their jacket or pants. Yet they say, “I only smoke once in a while.”

It’s all a big lie.

They lie to cover up the fact that they are addicted. I’m sure everyone knows someone who says they don’t smoke often, but then are caught during random moments.

I was out the other night with a girl who said she doesn’t smoke that much, but in the course of one beer at the bar, she had 4 cigarettes.

I don’t believe people can make it their entire lives and only smoke once a week. And if you can, kudos to you. The vast majority of people can’t.

Their body will be craving nicotine and going through withdrawal the entire week until it gets it again.

“We all start out as social smokers.”

The one good thing is that they aren’t yet to the point of being fully addicted, so there is time to quit before the addiction becomes severe and the point of no return.

They have a better chance at success, because they don’t smoke too often. If only they’d realize how unhealthy their lives will become if they continue.

Most people don’t realize this, or they simply think they are above it, which they clearly aren’t.
